Avalanche at Tunnel Creek

Today's Seattle Times:  a NY Times article about 12 skiers who skied down a steep mountain face at a high avalanche danger. Three skiers died in the ensuing snow slide.   The quotes are peppered with "like" and "you know" that cripple the interview.  Sad that 3 people died in a severe miscalculation of the mountain's potential.  Even worse that they had no evidence of learning to communicate without  using filler words.

Comments on the Internet have ranged from sadness, and ridicule.

Monday and Tuesday the PC parts from newegg.com arrived for the build to replace the 9 year old Dell 8300 Win XP computer--you can imagine how slow that computer was.  Based on recommendations on www.tonymacx86.com I got:

1 x ($0.00) Newegg Promotional Gift Card(The total amount of Gift Cards: $20.00)
Total cost: $821.37 with shipping.
I have a copy of Snow Leopard and Windows XP already.
Yesterday I spent all a.m. putting the parts together, figuring out where each wire went.  Then I filled out the rebate forms that eventually will net me $40.00.  I tried to install Windows XP, thinking I'd upgrade to Win 8 for $40.00 but the computer wouldn't finish--hardware is probably way too advanced and a web forum wizard said it's probably a 32 bit operating system OS.  I ordered Windows 8 for $99.99 from Newegg.

Then I tried to install Mac OSX, but the iboot disc I burned from tonymacx86.com didn't work b/c I didn't burn it properly.  I fit the definition of insanity according to Einstein--I tried many times to boot OSX without changing much at all.  I learned how to properly burn the image of a file to disk as required by the install procedure and can install Snow Leopard soon.

My call for help on the tonymac forum:
Flail me, I was thinking that I'd install my old copy of Windows XP first in my new GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H before installing OSX on another Hard drive. Little did I know that the computer would hang up in the install process.

The computer doesn't recognize an iBoot disk. I am entirely unsure what settings in the bios (accessed with del key) gets the whole process to a virgin state. I think I need to call newegg or Gigabyte? Or does someone here know what to do?

Yeah, I know I should have conducted a search to see if Windows xp would install. and Yeah, who'd want use the equivalent of an East German Trabant car when at least two operating systems are so much silkier?

Answered:
For BIOS, once in, hit function key for "Set Optimized Defaults, then make sure that the SATA ports are set to AHCI, High Precision Event Timer (HPET) is enabled is all you need to do for OS X.Why install WinXP? Planning to upgrade to Win8 cheap? Then do this before you even bother to install OS X. There are some problems involved with XP + OS X
1. WinXP and OS X will not share a drive anymore since OS X has to go on a GUID, HFS+ formatted drive and WinXP is strictly MBR formatting
2. XP will only install if the SATA ports are set to IDE, so you will need to slipstream AHCI the drivers during install (remember where it asks you to hit F6 to install third party drivers during the install process for XP?)
3. WinXP insists its drive must be first in boot order or it will not boot., so you have to put your /Extra folder in a small partition on the XP drive and also install the Chimera/Chameleon bootloader to the Xp drive.

Also, you probably have the 32bit version of XP. Therefore, due to Microsoft stupidity, you can only "upgrade" to Win8 32bit. If you want 64bit you have to get the Win8 builders edition for 99.99

Me again:
Going Bald,
Yes, I was t
hinking cheap upgrade to Win 8, though the $60 premium over the upgrade cost doesn't pay for the frustration.
Now back to mounting OSX. Using the GIGABYTE-UEFI DualBIOS:
Under the Save & Exit menu I highlighted and selected Yes for Load Optimized Defaults.
Under Power Management, High Precision Event Timing is/was Enabled
Under Peripherals, SATA Mode Selection is/was set at AHCI
Under BIOS Features, Boot option #1 was to PO: ST31000524AS which I assume is the hard drive settings. I changed that to P2: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7280S
I then put my iboot disc in the cd writer.
I highlighted Save & Exit Setup under the Save and Exit menu, responded Yes to "Save configuration and reset?"

Result: The LED on the cd drive lights up, then: black screen with: "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot device and press a key"
then I tried with the Boot option #1 as the HDD and Boot Option 2 as the CD. No go.
my iboot disc details:
iboot.iso 24.3 mb
I downloaded iBoot-Ivy-Bridge-1.0.0.zip, opened it and burned iBoot-Ivy-Bridge.iso to a disc & again. no go. disc details essentially the same as iboot.disc.
Returning to the installation instructions http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/...c-os-x-on.html: I removed 4GB of RAM leaving only a 4GB module in memory slot 1. still no go.
Wondering if that black screen was the boot prompt in step "5 At boot prompt, eject iBoot" I went on to 6. "Insert your Mac OS X Snow Leopard Retail DVD and press F5" no go.
Other details: led monitor plugged into D-Sub; USB keyboard & mouse, no video card. My Snow Leopard disc patiently waiting. The computer loves the win XP disc; the disc drive starts spinning and claims it's installing, and the hard drive light blinks a lot, but I know it'll just crash again & since win 8 isn't prohibitively expensive, I stop xp.
I am certain I am screwing up in some small way. I cannot find ACPI suspend Type, nor eXtreme Hard Drive anywhere in the BIOS. It cannot be possible that this pc will only recognize a windows disc, could it? Or am I just too stupid to do this? How can I help you help me?

Me again:
Just what is supposed to be on the iboot discs? all I have is iboot.iso or iboot-ivy-bridge.iso with a size of 24.3 mb.

Going Bald:
When you open the iBoot cd in finder (or win explorer), what do you see? If you see a .iso file the disc is improperly burned for a boot disc.
What you should see is a file called iBoot-Ivy-Bridge-1.0.0-tonymacx86.com.txt
a folder called usr and a folder called Extra.
(this is assuming you are looking at the original version of iBoot-Ivy-Bridge)
Regardless of the name you should see a .txt file and the 2 folders.
If you don't see these folders the iBoot disk is improperly burned

Me again:
Hi Going Bald,
No matter how much I thank you, it's not enough. your explanation hit the nail where it counts:

When you open the iBoot cd in finder (or win explorer), what do you see? If you see a .iso file the disc is improperly burned for a boot disc. What you should see is a file called iBoot-Ivy-Bridge-1.0.0-tonymacx86.com.txt
a folder called usr and a folder called Extra.
(this is assuming you are looking at the original version of iBoot-Ivy-Bridge)
Regardless of the name you should see a .txt file and the 2 folders.
If you don't see these folders the iBoot disk is improperly burned
I have only one file on my burned disks, iboot.iso on one and iboot-ivy-bridge.iso on the other; no folders. I have somehow missed disk image burning from K-12. I searched "how do I burn iboot to cd?" on the tonymac site & found a youtube link to a demo of imgburn--went to imgburn.com where I found a number of download "links" (to other software). After downloading something I didn't want, I carefully scrutinized the download links, & downloaded SetupImgBurn_2.5.7.0. I installed & ran imgburn then burned an image of the iso file to disk which contains the folders and files you outlined above.
Now, before I actually try this again, what method do you favor for a dual booting computer? Bootcamp/Parallels or second hard drive for 2nd os? Which os first? does it make a difference?

Timeline
Friday Oct 26.  I read the reviews on Windows 8:  Faster boot times! More efficient use of CPU and memory!  Great interface!  I ran the Upgrade Assistant from the Microsoft website--it said I could upgrade without any problems.  PC crashed during upgrade of Win XP to Win 8 on my Dell 8300.  error msg: 0x0000005D  PC would not boot.  Tech support said your PC is incompatible without a CPU upgrade from Dell.  Said to do a clean install.  I said No give me a refund.  After 2 hours, no refund.  Saturday, I called the Microsoft store and they gave me a refund in 5 minutes.

Saturday I shopped for another hard drive to install Windows on so that I could access the hard drive to which windows 8 wouldn't install.  Found an open box 250 GB drive at MacMall, which arrived at my door on Oct 31.  I also shopped for a windows 8 computer and found one at TigerDirect a Dell XPS 8500 with all sorts of fast stuff for 850 which I ordered, but decided to cancel Monday b/c I wasn't sure I liked Win8.
Tuesday I went to BestBuy to test drive Win8.  Went to multiple computers on display.  I didn't feel very comfortable with it.  most of the pc's didn't seem very responsive.  Win8 still has some bugs to work out with touchpads and the mouse.  I move around in Win XP using keyboard shortcuts.

Win8 worked best with the Lenovo Yoga laptop/tablet hybrid.

Luckily Win8 can emulate the Win7 interface to some degree.

Need to achieve some greater familiarity with Win before taking the Great Leap.

Meanwhile, WinXP is formatting the HD I got from MacMall.

The Wonderland Trail

A year ago I hiked with my eldest daughter Lexi to Enchanted Valley in the Olympic NP. The trip drove home both my lack of preparation & my disorganization. Too much fuel & cookware, not enough of the right food, a gooey coating on my tent (MSR Missing Link--which MSR replaced with a Fast Stash, which I then sold on eBay).  I sold my heavy Dana Designs Astral Plane pack & replaced it with an REI Flash 62. I replaced the tent with a Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. I wrote a spreadsheet on Google docs for a checklist and weight compiler.

Above:  my copy of the National Park Service wilderness trip planning map which I used while hiking the trail.  Not much detail, but that wasn't important to me, as I already knew the trail would go up and down.  The Trails Illustrated Map of Mt. Rainier NP, was large and cumbersome.  After the trip, I saw that the map given at the Park entrance booth had much more detail.

I'd forgotten that I had the National Geographic TOPO! Washington digital maps, b/c I like how I could print any portion of the trail in sizes to suit my needs.

One of the regular emails from Backpacker.com featured the 93 mile Wonderland Trail (WT). I read about others' travel there.  I read the Nat'l Park Service info, noting the March application deadlines.  I'd thought the WT would be like a mini PCT without the shuttles, mail food drops and rush to get to the food before the Postal Service closed for the day.  The year rolled past April--I hadn't applied for an itinerary.  I didn't buy a trail guide for the WT.  Outta sight & outta mind.  Then, at a race in early August my paddling/rowing friends Herb & Carrie W., who are hiking it in sections, mentioned the WT.  Could guys like me, who backpack only once a year, finish the WT with its 21,000' of ascents in one long swallow? I thought I could gradually, why not?, on Aug 20, I put my food &  gear together and drove to the Wilderness Information Center (WIC) at Longmire (lower left in the map above) the next day hoping for an itinerary, got 2 nights at Sunrise camp and 9 nights going counter clockwise CCW. I left a food/fuel cache at the WIC, drove to Packwood to pick up a bit more food & then to Sunrise. While ascending, the skies turned gray & the outside temp dropped to 45 deg F.  A cold mist blew me into the cafe for a $3 cup of coffee. I got my gear together and hiked up the 1.3 mi to Sunrise camp.  Gear list at the bottom of this blog along with some food hits and misses.

Sunrise camp--only 1.3 mi from the Sunrise parking lot, permitting a shakedown camp so I could return my sneakers to the car & p/u an extra shirt for two nights Aug 21,22 very cold nights--wore all my clothes to sleep--still cold.
note:  Want a better bag to replace food bag of fabric that won't  absorb moisture.
met Dave Siquont Jackie Monica
note:  need add sticky stuff for tent floor and maybe pillow cover
Aug  22, Bear#1 in camp.  After the bear waddled off, a National
Park biologist arrived w/ a beanbag gun to de-program bear.  Bear had other appointments.
Met Barb Tim Cheryl Bob
***Cord loops for tent zippers
Nylon Camera cover & maybe carry camera attached to tripod?
Weasel or marten crossing trail.
Baking soda replace t paste.

(August 23)Hiking on to:   Mystic Lake Camp which is .2 mi from the lake itself--many day hikers and WT backpackers going clockwise CW--maybe 10 of the latter.  If 10 backpackers in maybe 9 sections at any time going CW, maybe 90 people & maybe 180 total (CW+CCW).  Here's the throne at Mystic Lake Camp--lots of light, very airy:

a 3rd very cold night @  Mystic Lake CampTrout in the creek near site #4.  next a.m. top ramen & tea, struck camp, up past Mystic Lake, up a hill, thick frost on the wildflowers
saw Marmot, pika
bear #2, American dipper?
need Camp bucket to haul water?
wanted Flip flops for apre hike wear.
want my ***Head sweats

Trader Joe quick-cook Basmati rice seems not to cook nearly as well as at homeAug 24

Down the Carbon River Canyon, where a  rivulet wound down to a huge pile of dirt at the center--from the pile of dirt the rivulet increased in volume about 6-10 fold--the pile of dirt was the Carbon Glacier.

I heeded advice regarding poor signage lower on the Carbon River: take the suspension bridge to Cataract Valley and Spray Park.

Eagles Roost Camp ERC--saw the sign for ERC--it indicated 0.1 mile further down the trail, walked down the trail & walked, & walked.  Turned back and arrived at sign again.  Looking closer, I understood the sign worked better for clockwise travelers on the trail.  Note to self: "don't just walk. observe. think."  The tree root just below the trail sign was the first step down the trail to Eagles Roost camp and only after a steep 3rd step one could easily discern the trail to camp.
August 25 Leaving ER camp I heard the banter of a group of hikers coming up. I said I saw a bear, hoping they'd clam up so that they too could see the "bear."
climbing up to wildflower choked meadows below Golden Lakes then on a sun baked slope adorned with low bush blueberries and huckleberries.  juicy, sweet, fruity.
Golden Lakes camp:  site #2 was excellent with stump "chairs" & "tables",
Laurie Katie Jay w/Canon 7D body
View of peak, image of American bistort wildflower, nice enough to say 4 lb of tripod was worth carrying.

August 26  Saw first slug & bear #3 on trail.
Further south of Golden Lakes, high on the hill, wildflowers, There be blueberries yonder.

Randy &; Jackson @ N Pullayup. Jackson said "you can ride the shuttle from Longmire to Sunrise, if you want to cut your trip short. Whoa, I shouldn't have told you that."
saw bear #4 while descending from Golden Lakes.

arrived at Klapatche Plastic watchband separated--duct taped.  camp-side lake has frogs, tadpoles, 0.5 mm shrimp.  in camp: Met John (Expedia); & Dave, Siquont, Monica, Jackie reappear. up to St Andrews Lake for water and view. very windy--sand in everyone's tents.

August 27 Leaving Klapatche.  Another scree pile, another marmot.

Up Emerald Ridge.  steep climbing (like everywhere else)   Approaching the top:

passed Indian Henry (a place name, not a person) with its gorgeous meadows--how did I not take any pictures there?  Passed Devil's Dream Camp, reviled for its hordes of mosquitoes--I saw none--most perished with cold nights.
Barb, Tim, Bob Cheryl reappear.
I arrived at Pyramid Creek
A screw holding the tripod plate to the camera came loose.
Keenan 20ish kid had "goal zero" solar charging panels for iPhone.  Used Spot tracker. had nerve-wracking nighttime company of mama bear & 2 cubs at Dick Creek Camp.
Wanted: Thicker soled boots (than Lowa Renegades) maybe Asolo 520s

Aug 28 out of camp by 6:30 a.m.

Taken at 6:36 a.m. on iPod Touch:

To Longmire to p/u food cache & fuel, drop off tripod
eat a pancake breakfast.

Mostly smooth trails to
28 Maple Creek light rain @Maple Crk Ben who was at Eagles Roost.

Aug 29 Out of Maple creek.  Randy (Olympia) at Nickel Creek, hiked with, thru fog. Lunch at Indian Bar.  Randy pointed out landmarks, etc.  great to have that kind of source along.

John (Expedia) reappears. Many snow fields betw Indian Bar & Summerland.

Saw bear [#5]:

Bear #5 continued up out of sight & back into sight onto a snowfield, ascended the snowfield's vertical face and vanished over the icy top edge.  Short still "video."

Wristwatch abandoned me on way to Summerland, but other hikers recovered it.
It looks cold. I was cold!

First frame of a short celebration video in Summerland camp

From Summerland Thur Aug 30 a.m.dewfall and frost left foodbag wet.

Awoke before sunrise & shot photographs hand held--ugg:

The Golden hour for photography has plenty of red, pink and orange--I shot a few.

Then I hiked out--ixnay on retracing steps to Indian Bar for 2 more nights. saw Dan--who started with his girlfriend who'd pushed to hike the WT together & who'd dropped out at Sunrise on finding the trail too arduous.
Sign, "White River trailhead 0.1 mi" but missed the other sign nearby that directed me to turn left, walked to TH--backtracked and turned.  Another sign, "White River Road 0.1 mi" which I ignored and stayed on trail.  All signs are suited for hikers going clockwise. To White River campground where Randy had camped. xch tea & email. Randy repeated what most others had said, that the vast majority of hikers walking the WT travel in clockwise direction--maybe then only about 120 people on the trail at any time, which if true means more than one person per mile of trail. Then the 2000' climb up to Sunrise. Mostly in shade. More sky & sun told of my imminent arrival at Sunrise. Bravo.

To the car. Boots off. Flip flops on. to Longmire to p/u tripod/food/fuel.  Burger/fries

Note to self.  now what:  Next trip? not for awhile.  REI for betta headlight(?), betta hiking pants? no, forget the hiking pants, shorts with leg warmers worked well enough. food bag that doesn't absorb water, clothing bag (compression?), sleeping bag stuff bag (compression?), snack bag, garbage bag, dental bag.
Make a new stove wind screen. Mark head sweats on list

Note to Jon Brunk, Ski to Sea photog

We didn't buy more than one Ski to Sea race photo because your photographer shot the canoe leg from the bridge, rather than from river level.  From that angle, anybody with caps (such as us) will have their eyes obscured by the visors.  We appreciate that one can more easily isolate each competitor by shooting from above, but if that were the only object, you would have shot all the other legs of the race from a cherry picker.

We don't know what length lens you have, but if you really have to shoot from the Hannegan Bridge, you might consider a longer lens to reduce the angle and get a little more of competitors' faces.  We know your shooter could have done better than he/she did, because we had few or no canoes close to us as we approached the bridge. Many paddlers had two or three shots taken--we had only one.

If we race next year, we hope for better photos.

Thanks.

Smaller bread, bake often and fresher.

Yesterday (Monday), I made a 450 gm (flour weight) loaf of bread for the Harriers. Still had part of a 450 that I'd baked Sunday. The bread is lasting too long, if I don't eat it every meal.

Sunday p.m. I arrived at a solution: make smaller loaves and bake more frequently for fresher bread. I mixed a 250 gm loaf and baked it today--20 min covered, 15 min uncovered--gave it to John Forrester next door. Monday I mixed a 225 for baking tomorrow. Today I mixed another 250 for baking Thursday.

Toenail fungus

talking to Jeff Freed yest.  laughing about my ugly toenails. Lydia overheard, looked at one toenail and immediately said "fungal infection."  Said Peoplespharmacy.com recommends soaking in Listerine b.i.d. and rubbing with vics vaporub for a few months.  I got the Listerine in both brand and Walmart generic form (brand for the right foot, generic for the left. As for the Vaporub, I already have Tiger Balm generic which I'll use til I get back to store.  Soaked my toes last p.m.   I sanded down some toenails using the rotary sander & resoaked them this a.m.

Tiger balm is nice for making my toes tingle.  Fungus is getting tingled to death?

Socks

In an odd moment while looking at my own socks (below) I gave in to my curiosity re: how many stitches they'd have. At completion, at 56 st/row & 11 rows per inch and with 5" of leg above the heel flap & an 11" foot, the pair will have 19,712 stitches (give or take a thousand). At a rate of 1 stitch every 4.6 seconds (112 stitches timed today for this calculation), which includes sliding stitches along the cables, etc. it takes 25.2 hours to complete. That doesn't include knitting a gauge patch nor the time to close the toes.  Still fun to do something quasi-mindless while listening to radio, books on tape, etc.
With that in mind, my socks shouldn't be simply a testament to whether I'm smart enough to knit a sock, but rather something more of a personal statement.
